About This Tool

What It Does

FMCSA Lookup is a free, fast reference tool that helps you:

• Search and look up FMCSA violation codes by code number or description
• Identify which BASIC category a violation belongs to
• View the severity weight assigned to each violation
• Select violations from a single inspection and calculate total weighted points
• Toggle Out-of-Service (OOS) status for eligible BASICs
• View a breakdown of points by BASIC category

Who It's For

This tool is designed for U.S. trucking company owners, safety managers, compliance officers, and owner-operators who need quick access to violation code information and want to understand how inspection violations may impact their CSA scores.

What It Does NOT Do

• It does not calculate SMS percentiles or BASIC measures
• It does not predict your actual CSA score
• It does not account for multiple inspections, inspection history, or time decay across inspections
• It does not include crash indicator logic
• It is not an official FMCSA tool or product

Data Source

Violation codes, descriptions, BASIC categories, and severity weights are sourced from publicly available FMCSA violation code data (revised July 2025). The dataset contains approximately 2,400 violation codes.
